But is Tesla fundamentally worth 10x what it was two years ago? There are two possible explanations for Tesla's price action in a reasonably efficient market. Note that the two solutions aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. I think these are both true to some extent but at the present moment, that explanation 2 makes more sense. Tesla is not anywhere near one of the most profitable companies in the world, but it is one of the most valuable by market capitalization.
That gap between sky-high expectations and modest profitability would make me nervous as a buyer. As the price of TSLA has risen, the bull case has gone from reasonable disrupt the automotive industry with new technology and grab market share , to outlandish robo-taxis, SAAS, insurance at 3x the EBITDA margins of any other insurance company out there.
I'll value Tesla as a business from there and assume it'll trade at 33x earnings by then roughly a 2x PEG ratio. That's significantly higher than where the stock traded pre-COVID and significantly lower than the stock trades for today. Tesla obviously could fall much more given how much it has gone up on pure momentum, but the business is really making money, so I think the fall won't be as dramatic as it could be.
TSLA stock doesn't make much sense relative to the underlying business, even though the company is profitable and growing. I like the cars and I've previously made money in the stock, but I'd avoid this stock on valuation, first and foremost.
